MULCHING AND TRIMMING

Mulching and Trimming
All mulch is not equal. Most people think of mulch as simply bags of dead, ground-up leaves, tree limbs, and bark. But it’s so much more. Mulch is protection, fertilization, and embellishment. And with a responsibility like that, your mulch has to be the best it can be; and it has to be installed correctly.

Mulching is a four-step process and requires art, science, and expertise.

The first step is science and requires knowing the pH of your soil, the types of plants being mulched, and the microclimate of your specific yard—and not that of your neighbor’s!

The second step is the art—choosing the visual characteristics of the mulch that will enhance the presentation of your landscaping as well as your hardscaping. Do you need fine mulch, chunkier mulch, or a blend? Do you know what color is best? Should mulch contrast with its surroundings or blend in? Match or blend? And do you have access to all these mulch varieties to test and see for yourself?

The third step involves expertise and is a critical, oft-forgotten process—preparation. The finished quality of any landscaping or hardscaping project is largely determined by the preparation that goes into it. To that end, we don’t skimp on prep. When you work with Unique Landscaping, you can expect preparation like this:

  • Cleanup by removing dead branches and leaves from last year
  • Dig medium or deep bed edges with sharpened tools to create a well-defined landscape
  • Remove and haul away all of the edgings to prevent grass from sprouting in the bed’s border
Cover exposed roots with good dirt and level the bed
  • Pull all the weeds and apply pre-emergent weed control
  • Prune small shrubs and trees

The fourth step is the make or break part of mulching—installation. This is where expertise is absolutely the most essential.
Once we’ve completed our preparation checklist, we install your mulch evenly, about 2” thick. We always install mulch with hand tools rather than blowers. Blowers cause excessive dust and an uneven finish. And that doesn’t meet Digger’s standards.

This rigorous attention to detail ensures that your mulch job is beautifully and professionally done. And that the final presentation of your landscaping and hardscaping project reflects perfectly on your home environment.
